SECOND START/PINE HILL SCHOOL supports adults and children with learning disabilities and emotional problems through education, counseling and job training as well as job placement and job retention. We collaborate with other community agencies to facilitate these services. Since its inception, PINE HILL SCHOOL has provided quality individualized education for children who have not had their educational needs met in other school settings.

OPEN POSITIONS:

SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

JOB DUTIES:

  • Teaches daily lessons to assigned students from school approved classroom syllabus.
  • Supervises, mentors, and works collaboratively with assigned support staff.
  • Monitors and assesses, on a regular basis, the academic and behavioral progress of each assigned student pursuant to their approve IEP or EP. 
  • Works collaboratively with school staff (i.e. Educational Advisor, Clinical Manager, Behavior Specialists) and parents to regularly assess the academic and behavior needs of assigned students and develop corrective measures as necessary to maintain the student's maximum learning availability and learning capacity. 
  • Plans, implements, and supervises all classroom lesson, learning activities, including all out of classroom field trips, non-physical education recreational, and social activities.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a California Special Education Mild/Moderate- Moderate Severe Credential. 
  • A four-year college degree from a fully accredited institution is required, preferably in Education, Child Psychology, Math, Science, English, or Social Science, with a Masters degree being highly desirable.
  • Must possess a C-Best Certificate, with a M/M (Mild/Moderate Handicapped) or LH (Learning Handicapped) Credential preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of demonstrated professional experience working with emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children and/or adolescents is required, with experience in a combined Special Education-Mental Health work environment preferred.
  • Must have passed the CSET exam. 

TEACHER INTERN JOB DUTIES:

  • Maintains regularity and stability in classroom.
  • Follows students' Individual Educational Plans (IEP's) and monitors students' progress.
  • Implements lesson plans, modifies curriculum to accommodate various learning styles, and provides on-going evaluation.
  • Collaborates with Education Assistant in presenting multi-grade activities.
  • Keeps journal (grade book) reflecting student productivity, individual needs, parent/teacher concerns, ensures on-going teacher-parents contact/communication.
  • May participate in parent-teacher conferences and staff meetings.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a California Mild/Moderate/Severe Intern Credential.
  • A four-year college degree from a fully accredited institution, preferably in Education, Child Psychology, Math, Science, English, History, or Social Science.
  • Must be in the internship program working towards a Special Education Credential.
  • Must have passed the CSET exam. 

ONE-TO-ONE EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT JOB DUTIES:

  • Provides in classroom behavior management and academic support to the classroom Teacher by
  • performing tasks that evaluate, monitor, and manage the actions of the students ensuring that they 
  • are behaviorally available to participate in class lessons.
  • Performs problem solving with students through coaching, mentoring, and disciplining according to 
  • procedures set forth by the classroom Teacher.
  • Responds to and de-escalates crisis situations in the classroom by mediating conflicts between individual students, and/or staff and teaches healthy and effective conflict resolution to the students.
  • Physically intervenes with aggressive students who act out their aggression in prescribed situations as detailed in Day School policy. (This includes but is not limited to physically restraining, escorting, lifting, or taking necessary action to maintain eye contact with the student.)
  • Takes on other related duties as needed within the scope of current assigned duties and position related work experience. 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • A High School diploma is required or a four-year college degree from an accredited institution, preferably in education or child psychology.
  • Must complete Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training (i.e., CPI, PART, Handle with Care) within the first year of employment.

CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP YEAR INTERNSHIP POSITION (CFY) JOB DUTIES:

  • Assists the Speech and Language Pathologist to develop therapy, individually and/or in small groups for those children with identified communication disorders.
  • Aides in preparing evaluations and communicates with parents on individual pupil progress and needs.
  • Takes on other related duties as needed under the supervision of the Speech and Language Pathologist.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters Degree in Communication Disorders Speech Pathology.
  • Must have experience working with at risk, special education students.

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary/ hourly depend on experience and education.

SCHOOL-BASED COUNSELOR JOB DUTIES:

  • Serve as a support system and direct resource for staff by providing guidance for effective class management.
  • Work clinically and educationally with individual students.
  • Act as a leader and/or co-leader of therapy and social skills groups.
  • Help plan, organize and carry out individual educational plan (IEP) goals.
  • Assist in maintaining a warm environment.
  • Coordinate behavior plans with teacher and Behavior Specialist.
  • Help maintain open communication with parents, guardians, and caregivers.
  • Follow all crisis intervention procedures as set forth by the individual’s IEP.
  • Assesses and provides interventions when students cannot effectively function within the classroom setting.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Four-year college degree required, in Counseling/Clinical studies.  Masters degree in Counseling, Psychology or related field is highly desirable.  Knowledge of Special Education- related programs, policies, and laws.
  • Must possess a current Marriage and Family Counseling License or Ph.D.
  • At least (1) year of counseling experience with students with learning/emotional/mental disabilities.  Must have strong counseling/behavior management experience and ability to work effectively with severely learning/emotionally disabled adolescents and children. 
  • Must complete CPR, First Aid, and Handle With Care Training.
