The Latest on the Closure from Our Executive Director

Updated March 25, 2020

Dear Second Start Families and Caregivers,

The Santa Clara County Office of Education has made a unified, regional decision to extend school closures through May 1, 2020 to slow the spread of COVID-19 and the Health Officers of Monterey County have issued a shelter in place mandate for the period of March 17 – April 7, therefore our staff and students will not be returning to Pine Hill School until Monday, May 4th and Pine Hill South until Wednesday, April 8th, 2020.  Newton Northern Nevada will be following the recommendations of the Nevada Department of Education and therefore will remain closed through April 16th.

During this difficult time, Second Start is doing our best to mitigate these extenuating circumstances and ensure our students receive reasonable access to instruction materials and home activities.  Pine Hill School and Pine Hill South will have assignments from each homeroom teacher that families can access through the Edison, Newton Learning Center, and Pine Hill South program pages of our website and for counseling support visit the Pine Hill School counselor page.  You can visit our Covid-19 closure resource page for links to other learning and enrichment resources as well as additional services including free lunch options and free or reduced rate internet service that are available within our communities.

We will be continually monitoring County Public Health Departments for further guidance, and provide updates to our families on our website.  For questions about Pine Hill School and Pine Hill South contact and for Newton Northern Nevada contact

Be safe and well,

Tara Bevington

Executive Director
